Turn back the clock 300 years to the dramatic events of the Northern War (1700-20) and follow the daring exploits of Frederikshavn’s gallant naval hero, Tordenskiold, in his struggle against the Swedish foe!
Each summer, over 1000 volunteers from Denmark, Norway and Sweden are joined by professional actors, instructors and technicians to stage the town’s dazzling 3-day event set around the harbour, town and Krudttårnet, the old Gun Tower and actual site where Tordenskiold and his guards set off on their sweeping attacks across the Kattegat sea.
The heart of the festival is a spectacular all round theatrical experience with all the very latest multimedia effects and giant screens relating the dramatic tales of Tordenskiold’s daredevil exploits. A fleet of tall ships and replicas of 18th century wooden vessels line up along the harbour while “King Frederik IV” and his escort of guards parade through the streets. Displays of sword duelling, various 18th century handicrafts such as basket weaving, food and beverage specialities, music and fanfares plus the wonderful, contemporary costumes all handcrafted by skilled locals are just some of the colourful sights, sounds and activities which can be experienced by over 25.000 visitors who annually flock to Frederikshavn to be a part of this ever popular event.
Every evening, the festival culminates in an explosive, breathtaking sea battle out in the harbour where, to the echo of cannon balls blasting, Norwegians and Danes stand united against the Swedish fleet!
In 2009, Tordenskiold Days takes place from June 26-28. Entrance is free. |
